Reflection question: When Jesus chooses to heal someone on the Sabbath, the religious leaders are so mad they start planning to kill him. Why do you think they are so upset?
In part, the Pharisees were upset because Jesus had broken the law of the Sabbath. Their rigidity blocked them from seeing that, at times, rules might need to be set aside so that the love of God and neighbor can take priority. It seems that when our relationships with God and one another are placed first, the rest of our decision-making tends to fall into place.
Because according to Jewish law, nothing or no work was supposed to be done on the Sabbath. Jesus didn't care though, because He wanted to help the people that needed help, because of the love He had for them.
