Psalm 14

Psalm 14

Reflection question: As I read this Psalm today, I think of my friends and relatives who are atheists. They are really wonderful, compassionate people. They just happen to struggle with the idea of God.

And actually, I don't think they're fools at all. Instead, I believe their lives and paths have led them to that particular understanding of the world. Who am I to call them a fool?  Instead, I just hope and pray that whatever their worldview, they feel loved and have a sense of purpose. And if they do become open to a belief in God, I pray that I can be a helpful resource along the journey.

So I disagree with the Psalmist when he/she says, "Fools say in their heart, "There is no God." I would never call someone a fool. Especially since no one can fully walk in anyone else's shoes or brains. And I find that approach really not that helpful. I would never quote that verse to someone.

But I do understand that sometimes we get so discouraged (and I think the Psalm writer was), that all we see is dismal and gray. There are times when everything and everyone seems discouraging. Maybe that's what the Psalm writer was experiencing.

Thoughts?

  1. I agree with you I would never call anyone a fool. But I do feel that those who are searching for more meaning in their lives would find it in the Lord. I also try not to be the judge of others. That is for the Lord to do. We can only pray and be a role model and live our lives in a way that shows that God is a meaningful part of our lives.
