Reflection question:
In the midst of all the sadness, confusion, and despair of this chapter, we hear powerful words from the centurion in verse 39. He states, "Truly this man was God's Son." It is amazing that Jesus was surrounded by people who didn't fully understand his identity. But surprisingly, an outsider - a centurion, did understand. What might this teach us?
Sometimes we are too close to something to really see it. I feel that way with my faith sometimes. I have been a Christian my whole life, but sometimes I take it for granted that God is always there. Especially when things are going good in my life it is easy to forget that everything I have comes from God. I forget to be thankful and to pray and worship him.
ReplyDeleteThe saying that," you can't see the forest because of the trees," might fit here. I think that the centurion did believe that there was Jesus, but his faith was a little short, so he had to see Jesus die and see the destruction to be convinced that it was ,indeed, Jesus on the cross. It also teaches that it you don't have to fully understand things to see them for what they are. Maybe you don't understand a painting, but you can see the beauty of it.
