Mark, Chapter 1

Welcome to Journey with Zion. Each day, I'll post a link to the next chapter of Mark. You can read it online or from your own Bible at home. Then I will share a reflection question and a piece of artwork related to the gospel text.

Feel free to leave a comment if you'd like to engage in some online conversation. If you prefer to participate but not leave comments, that is 100% okay, too.

We begin with Mark, Chapter 1.

"Jesus Tempted" by Chris Cook

Reflection question:
While Jesus is baptized by John, he sees the heavens opened and he hears God say, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased." What were the different emotions Jesus may have been feeling in that moment?

What are the other details of this first chapter that really spoke to you today?

  1. I'm sure Jesus essentially felt loved. Loved in a way so profound and pure that I likely can't comprehend.

    1. One of the things that spoke out to me was Jesus healing power, and the power to drive out the demons in people

  2. I think that some of the emotions that Jesus was feeling was joy and happiness; along with his love of John and his Father. Another thing that I noticed is that after John was arrested, he said the time as been fulfilled. Was this a fulfillment of a prophecy?

  3. Thank you for creating this space for a Bibile study, it is a nice idea.
In Mark 1, I think Jesus experienced an all-encompassing love as He was baptized. Then, shortly after, he experienced temptation while He was in the desert. Even there, God was with Him. It seems that this ebb and flow occurs in my life too. It is good to be reminded that God's love is always with us, and that Jesus went through the same things we do.
